Featured Member of the Month for July 2010 -
David "Hunter Hawk" Pierce
July's Featured FWSA member, David “Hunter Hawk” Pierce, has amassed an impressive resume of recordings and performances - including singing, live-action, and even movie roles – over a forty-year career. His musical outreach began as a member of a 1960's rock-and-roll band, and is now centered in the storytelling, country-western style that has been on display as a regular at our FWSA Monday Night Open Mics. David has played for audiences across the nation at Western Heritage Festivals, cowboy poetry gatherings, rodeos and cowboy churches, and is actively planning a return to the life of a touring musician.
David's heritage is that of a Native American from the Comanche tribe. He grew up in the Brownwood area. One of his fondest memories from his younger years was from the mid-1960's. David and his friends made a routine of piling into a car and heading toward the Mexican border at Del Rio/Ciudad Acuna to pick up the “outlaw” signal from radio station XERF,. DJ'd after midnight by the legendary “Wolfman Jack”. David and his buddies became regular call-in visitors on the now-historically famous program, and were given the name “the Boys from Brownwood” by the famous disc jockey.
David spent over thirty years as a railroad engineer for Santa Fe while always keeping a hand in the music business. He has recorded a CD in Nashville, “The Well of Life” as well as two others here in Texas - “The Old Heartbreakers” and “Wanted – David Hunter Hawk”. While in Nashville, he was a a featured guest on the National Christian Television Network “Fanning The Flame” production for six years
In later life he became involved in re-enactments of gunfights, performing live action shows at the John Wayne Alamo Village in Bracketville (west of San Antonio) for many years, even receiving awards as “Most Talented Gunfighter”. This lead to his being cast in many roles in western-type movies, most recently The Man Who Came Back (2008). In all, he has been part of 12 motion picture productions.
David and his wife Karen recently were remarried after being divorced for 23 years - this after a first marriage of 20 years. David credits what he terms the “miracle” of his granddaughter Lily Rose's birth as being the catalyst that brought them together again. They are the parents of one child, daughter Gina. Twenty of the 500-plus songs David has written during his prolific songwriting career center on this joyful reunion of their family. His songs pull no punches in his retelling of the harrowing road he has walked back from alcohol addiction to sobriety, and this honesty is a hallmark of all his original compositions.
David is currently represented by Big Sugar Music Co. and producer Jerry Cramer. He plans to record both a gospel and a country-western compilation in the near future. You can hear a cut of his fine work by selecting “Music Clips” on the FWSA website, and clicking on his name.
